The “tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow” speech is considerably well known from Macbeth, but sadly for dark reasons. “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow” is one of many quotes that show a hopeless outlook on life. Macbeth has lived through difficult experiences through his life; murders, betrayal, and, most recently, the death of his wife. Macbeth learned seconds before giving this speech that his wife has committed suicide, which contributes an even larger sense of hollowness. Macbeth makes strongly morbid personifications to life; he essentially comments that all days creep by slowly and never fast enough, and still none of these days matter because the end result will always be death. Such a feeling of having a life worth nothing is a tragic feeling to have, and is usually hard to understand. This soliloquy makes it more obvious to understand why someone would feel so hopeless. Macbeth, for example, has lost most of the reason he sees life worth living; In one example, he has lost his wife, his reason for seeking to be king. He has also played himself to lose his friends and the reputation that others admire about him. By the end of this soliloquy, it is clear that Macbeth has become the opposite of what he was known as. He was seen as loyal, brave, respected, and full of life. This transition of his character is surprising to me. Through this play, Macbeth has changed from good to evil, from loyal to treacherous, and brave to (at least being seen as) cowardly. However, I can still see that through all this-through all the transitions-Macbeth still shows a powerful and strong personality. I know that the importance of this soliloquy is to show how Macbeth is beginning to feel useless and outline the impact of feels meaningless, but for Macbeth’s character it seems like an empowerment for him. Instead of feeling that life is a tale told by an idiot, Macbeth seems like the kind of person to use tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow until the end of time to gain motivation to perform the best.
