As Gray and Macpherson point out the current definition of only five senses is a woefully inadequate conception to explicate the intricate working of the human senses, by knowing and limiting our views to a predetermined defined conceptual theory, it inhibits our cerebral ruminations to inhabit safe parameters, once our brains begin to conceptualize a more extensive ideal, then superlative growth is possible (Macpherson,2014).
Do you think that the definition of sensation needs to be expanded? Why? By limiting our definition of senses to only five, we really settled for simplified explanation, instead we should expand the definition, to allow greater exploratory thinking and therefore greater expansion of scientific knowledge. However, our senses are multi-sensory, it's not one part of our body that senses our equilibrium, for example the inner ear works in tandem with the brain and visual and sensory cues to keep you in equal balance, however if one part is damaged then your sense of balance can be impaired. Accordingly, Teachers use phrases such as good job and rewards a student for learning to read simple phrases or even small words. By continuously encouraging a child while learning eventually the child learns to read and the reward is stopped. Because a student associates reading with reward there is a positive connotation associated with learning over time and learning comes automatically, many skills are learned this way. As toddlers we learn many of our skills from parental encouragement and negative reinforcement, it's interesting to note that negative reinforcement means we repeat a behavior to avoid a negative stimuli, so if we are averse to being late, then we will learn to leave early to avoid being late, this means we are avoiding the negative stimulus(Eddy,
