‘Mad Men’ and its Cultural Impact in Today’s Society The television series Mad Men had an impressive and an immersive impact within culture and society in today’s world. In the history of television, there have been many shows with an impact on culture and society, from I Love Lucy, to The Simpsons, to The Brady Brunch, but within the last decade, few ensconced a show like Mad Men, and the episodic and significant series that played a part in fashion, the news, imitation, society, and spun a revisit to history, from think-pieces to articles on the ramifications of each episode and each season and their meanings, interpretations, and effects on both the society …show more content…

However the themes of sexism, racism, homophobia, and the expectations of men and women, as well as the societal standards regarding health, smoking, drinking, and the freedom of the USA, and the people within it, during these times, was well portrayed and showcased. Although there have been many series and television shows that have had a cultural impact in the past several decades, shows like Mad Men have showcased in the past decade, a shift towards formative, well-acted, and quasi-realistic television series that showcase past decades to a current …show more content…

In some ways, this was a welcome, and interesting, variation on our lifestyles and societies of today. In other ways, it led to a reflection of the values that Americans held during the 1960s through the 1970s. During this time, the Sexual Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, The Civil Rights Movement, John F. Kennedy’s Assassination, and the ending of World War II and the beginnings of the Korean War took place, and Americans began to question their own identity. Were they a part of a greater American Dream, like the children of the 1950s and 1960s, or where they able to self-identify and think of themselves as individuals? Besides the entertainment, excellent story lines and characters, and the multiple Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards the show received during its’ run from 2007-2015, the series also inspired people around the world to ask, and re-ask, questions and long-held beliefs about this time in American history. If one searches online for any reviews or synopses of Mad Men, one will find many that can help explain the importance of the show and showcase its importance beyond a mere television series.
