I enjoyed reading the story The Necklace because it teaches a powerful lesson through the experience of Madame Loisel. Because of Madame Loisel’s distorted attitude towards appearances, her life ultimately results in grief and suffering. When I was reading the text, I noticed that the name “Madame Loisel “ sounds very similar to the French word “Mademoiselle”, meaning young unmarried woman. I believe that this is not a coincidence; the author used it as a deliberate name to emphasize, “Appearances are deceiving, so focusing on appearances is the wrong attitude”. Although her name is Mademoiselle, Madame Loisel is married to a caring husband who only has one thing in mind: to make her happy. Yet, on the outside, she still wants to make others believe she is a young and single woman. Nonetheless, she is obsessed with the thought of appearing rich and of the upper class by having superficial things. This attitude prevents her from experiencing happiness in life. At the night of the party she finally had the superficial things to enhance the appearance, i.e., her new dress and borrowed jewels. That night, she wasn’t rich and only had the façade of a upper class life. Nonetheless, appearing rich was the only time in the story when she was happy.
