It is my pleasure to be writing you regarding the openings for civilian contracted RNs of the Coronary Care Step-Down Unit at Madigan Army Medical Center. My passion and motivation for being a nurse stems from the examples of the nurses who cared for me during the numerous times I was a patient in Madigan Army Medical Center as a child. It would be an honor to work within the community that changed my life. I have been a visitor several occasions to this specific unit and have been a patient at a different hospital receiving coronary care. I’ve done extensive personal research and learned what text books will say about most of the treatments that this unit will provide; however, my ability to tell patients about my personal experiences provides a unique ability to empathize and serve this specific population. My supplemental psychology education fortified my acuteness awareness of verbal and nonverbal communication which enables me to assess patients holistically. For example, during a shift at Seattle Children’s, I became aware of a patient’s family member interacting with hospital staff in an agitated manner. Respectfully, I intervened and asked if I might be of assistance. I listened attentively to the family’s concerns and was able to defuse the situation. When I suggested to my preceptor nurse how the patient’s family dynamics might impact the patient’s recovery, the preceptor stated, “I don’t normally see that level of perceptiveness and compassion until nurses have been working several
