In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses Hamlet’s thoughts and actions to prove how closely related revenge is to madness. Hamlet’s madness is caused by a few different things such as depression, the killing of his father, and the death of Ophelia. These allow Hamlet’s rage and insanity to take over and act out. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet battles with the death of his father, depression, and death of ophelia which cause his mental state to decline. In the beginning of the play, the character Hamlet’s madness is proven by the great depression and grief he went through. When Hamlet’s father died, his life went straight downhill. When Hamlet is talking to the King, he states, “Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief, That can (denote) me truly”(I,ii, 85-86). This lets us know that Hamlet felt that nobody understood what he was going through. Soon, depression had completely taken over Hamlet’s life. Hamlet felt that his life didn’t amount to the pain he was going through. When Hamlet is having a conversation with Polonius, the father of Ophelia, he tells him, “ You cannot,(sir,) take from me anything that I will more willingly part withal-except my life, except my life, except my life”(II, ii, 233-235). There’s always that one girl that you will always love. That's how Hamlet felt about Ophelia. When Ophelia was talking to Polonius about Hamlet she says, “My lord, he hath importuned me with love In honorable fashion”(I,iii, 119-120). This expresses how much Hamlet loves her. Later on, she finds out that Hamlet killed her father which caused her great depression and led to suicide. This broke Hamlet into a thousand pieces. Hamlet tells his mother, “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers Could not with all their quantity of love Make up my sum” (V, i, 285-287). This shows how much love he had for Ophelia which caused his madness to go
