Madness In Larry Woiwode's The Beginning Of Grief

Some may say that death bring people together but in reality it tears them apart and creates madness within. In “The Beginning of Grief” by Larry Woiwode Stanion’s wife had passed away and caused some degree of madness. He had to take on all the duties that parents had to do cleaning, cooking, working etc. After his children got home from school they were around the table eating dinner when Stanion got mad at the kids and questioned them about what had happened at school. Through out the story stanion is get increasingly more angry as he was never the calm headed type. In Larry Woiwode’s short story, “The Beginning of Grief”, the theme of madness is shown through setting and the characters Stanion, Kevin, and Carol. The story is based within their home around the dinner table eating and talking about the day. Around the table is Stanion and his five kids three boys and two girls. Once everyone is home and around the table during dinner, they start to talk about the day and what happened. Even though Kevin is angry he’s not allowed to leave the table “You sit right where you are till I’m through with you” ( ). Stanion as the dad of the family had to take over all of the duties that parents have to do cooking cleaning and taking care of the kids. Towards the end of the story he starts going insane or mad because of all the things he’s in charge of. Stanion while at dinner is talking to his son and he’s getting progressively more angry and he says “Now get upstairs,” “get upstairs before something worse happens.” ( ). An accident had happened at school and Stanion isn’t putting up with it he was never the calm parent and when his wife passed it got worse.
