“One thing I’m very concerned about is that as African-Americans, as women, we do not feel that we have the power to change the world and society as a whole.” With her life and accomplishments, she proves that idea very, very wrong. (Mae C. Jemison Biography, 2015) Mae C. Jemison was the first female African-American to become an astronaut and go to space. On June 4, 1987 she was the first African-American women admitted into the astronaut training program. On September 12, 1992 she blew into space with six other astronauts on the Endeavor on mission STS47. Mae C. Jemison created awareness that African-Americans and women can change the world, took responsible risks to innovate ways to overcome doubt that minority groups can make a difference.

Jemison has impacted the society in many ways. The National Air and Space Museum stated in 2010 “An alternative public school in Detroit, Michigan, The Mae C. Jemison Academy, was named after her in 1992. She gladly accepted the position of a role model and hoped to remind other African-Americans that the sky’s the limit.” Then Jemison started using her considerable talents and energies to help children in school, particularly in science. “What we have to figure out is how to maintain the 3 C’s of science-curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking-in our children.” (Mueller, 2003). She co-sponsors an annual International Science Camp for kids ages 12-16, which is free and focuses on critical thinking and experiential learning. She also serves as the National School Literacy Advocate for the Bayer Corporation’s program “Making Science make sense”. However, probably her broadest step to teaching kids was the 2001 publication of her book Find Where The Wind Goes: Moments of my life.
