"ALL THAT HAPPENS MUST BE KNOWN” (Eggers 68). While Mae Holland adapts to her new job at the Circle, she transitions from being opaque to transparent. Mae rapidly transforms into somebody who does things for the benefit of others rather that for her. Mae’s social media usage, confidence, and self-consciousness change after becoming transparent. Her dream job starts to become other people’s nightmare.
Mae Holland received a job at the Circle with the help of her best friend and former college roommate Annie. The Circle is unlike anything Mae has ever seen before, especially compared to her old job at a utility company. The Circle is run by “the Wise Men” which include Tyler Alexander Gospodinov, Eamon Baily, and Tom Stenton. When she returns to work after visiting her parents and Mercer, two employees named Josiah, and Denise confront her. They talk to her about her lack of participation. “We see this workplace as a community, and every person who works here is part of that community” (Egger 178). Prior to this confrontation Mae had been doing excellent with customer experience, setting a record score for a new employee, but this was not enough. Participation in social media sites and sharing her interests with others is something the Circle wanted from her. Denise asks Mae, “Are you reluctant to express yourself because you fear your opinions aren’t valid?” (Eggers 188) A question asked after Mae shares that one of her hobbies is kayaking. Josiah is shocked by the fact that this information was not present in her profile for others to possibly relate and comment
