“I am going to beat it... Life is going to go on for me and I’m going to be a happy man” (Gutman 42). On November 7, 1991 Magic Johnson announced he had human immunodeficiency virus or HIV (Healthline). This disease has cost people their lives and people's lives are changed from it. The disability of HIV or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) have mental and body symptoms (“U.S. Statistics”). The body symptoms include skin flaking off, being dry, peeling off (Saliba 23) , Fingernails falling off (32), and weight loss (14). Mentally it is hard to sleep, they become weak,and you are tired all the time (23). So he had to find a way to overcome it. He had to first take a vacation to get his mind away from this,and his wife could get away from all the attention on her (Haskins 74-75). He then found ways that he could try to beat the disease, and the way in the 1990s was to take pills, so he did. He smile all the time to keep himself like himself and not change just because of the disease (Gutman 42). The same season he left in he came back to play in the all-star game (42). He won multiple championships, most valuable player or MVP, finals most valuable player, and is the NBA man of the year award (Gutman 45). He won five NBA championships with Los Angeles Lakers. His teams that he played with are called showtime because of all the stars that were on the team. In these championships he was named MVP of the finals three times. He won 3 MVP in his career, and lead the career total stats with assists until it was broken by John Stockton. He is now fifth all-time. He was only named to first all-NBA one time in his career. He played in 11 all-stars games out of his 12 season, and he also played on the 1992 dream team (Haskins 78). For career totals he had 17,239 points, 9,898 assists, 6,076 rebounds, and 1,698 steals (78).
Magic Johnson had some inspiration to beat this disease. He knew most people did not know what the disease was in the first place, so he set himself to a standard to be the leader of this disease and try to find a cure for it (Haskins 73-74). He took pills to try and beat the drug (73-74). His wife as well help out a lot with him because she knew that it was hitting him, so she had to take action as well and try to get him up (73). So she help out with him by making them both have to go through the process
