In the book, Refugee, one of the main characters, Mahmoud, demonstrates grit in numerous events. Mahmoud shows grit by staying strong and attempting to stay afloat on the water while drowning. Additionally, he showed grit when he did not surrender his problems and tried to change the unideal event happening to him. Lastly, although Mahmoud knew the journey would be challenging, he showed grit when walking to Austria. Mahmoud constantly demonstrates grit, courage, and determination. To begin with, in the book Refugee, when Mahmoud drowns in the water because his dinghy crashed into the rocks, he shows grit. He shows grit because even if he was exhausted and wanted a break, he continued to travel to Austria. The book quotes, “We can do it. We have already come this far. We can go a little farther”. (301) This describes Mahmoud continuing to walk to Austria despite knowing it would be a long and tiring journey. Mahmoud also encouraged his family to go on when they were hesitant about the gruesome journey to Austria. Grit is displayed as Mahmoud knew that the journey would not be easy, but he did not back away and was determined to walk to his destination. Furthermore, Mahmoud persevered in going to Austria even if Mahmoud was tired and desperately needed rest. The book reads, “All he wanted was to lie down and sleep, but Mahmoud knew they could not stop...They had to move forward. Always forward, even if it kills them.”(301). The following quotes prove that Mahmoud would not stop for anything, always moving forward, even when the situation was grim. With his incredible dedication and persistence, Mahmoud and the rest of the refugees eventually reached Austria successfully.
