My intended major is biological sciences. My intended goal is to provide myself with the knowledge and experience to further myself as an individual and to further the people that I interact with. In this statement, I aim to impart a comprehensive account of how I anticipate to reach my goal and provide the pathway that has guided my interests and built my character. These past two years, I studied at both UCSB and Foothill Community College as a biological sciences major. An anecdotal experience, that really established the foundation of my interest in biology, was an Immune Systems Biology class, I took with Dr. Low my third quarter at UCSB. Prior to this course, I had yet to really refine what I wanted to focus on in school. This class served that exact purpose. The material I learned presented such a vast and profound scope of unexplored science, and I have been drawn to it ever since. My interest has specified to HIV/AIDS research. I volunteered at the Good Samaritan Hospital for nearly 3 years. During this time, I was involved in the personal side of patient care. I partook in the S.M.I.L.E. program and patient services. In these programs, I provided patients with support, entertainment and assistance. My other duties included delivering medicine, discharging and escorting patients. I not only learned a lot about hospital infrastructure, but I was able to truly experience patient care. In 2011, I also shadowed Dr. Dossik, an Orthopedic Surgeon in the Bay Area. I sat in on multiple surgeries and followed him during his rounds in the hospital and his office. My contact with the medical environment and patient care allowed me to develop a better understanding of the medical field.
