Before furthering my education here at San Jose State University, I wasn’t sure what my interest and career path I wanted. Although I did always want to go into the law enforcement field, I was never sure exactly what I wanted to include myself in that field. As I began my career here at SJSU I developed an interest in the criminal justice system, more specifically in the field of law. I followed my interest and join clubs such as the Pre-Law Society club here at SJSU. Through this club I got the opportunity to meet and sit in panels on law students including Alan Adkisson.
It can be in different majors though. Criminal Justice is probably the biggest one picked. Law enforcement is highly recommended as well. They will both help you in your job.
The Major components of the Criminal Justice System There are three major components to the Criminal justice system; Law enforcement, Courts, and Corrections. Law enforcement is the first tier of the Criminal justice system, this includes; Police officers, Sheriffs, federal agents, games and parks rangers, detectives, as well as others who make the first contact with criminals. These groups are responsible for enforcing the law, investigating crime, and apprehending individuals sought for committing the crime. Law enforcement must be knowledgeable of rights such as but not limited to, Miranda rights, search and seizure rights, and reasonable stops. Why I Chose My Major I chose Criminal Justice for my major because it’s appealing to me. As a child I looked up to police, and I was never scared to go up to them and just start asking questions and everyone I asked was always willing to talk back and knowing they did not even had to pay any mind to me at all being that I was so little to even know how the system worked but they did their best to explain it to me. One Police officer in particular I really looked up to Mr. Brad Garafola. He was a close family friend him and my dad grew up together. He was our neighborhood cop; he stopped by, while on patrol, at house to visit at least once a week to check up on us.
Students in the criminal justice department are taught that our main objective in the justice system and our careers is to serve and also protect those involved in our community. For as long as I can remember, my goal in life has been to provide service by protecting and serving those who are close to me. My penchant for service is what eventually led me to the Criminal Justice program at Valdosta State University. This passion for service began at a very young age when my life was turned upside down when I relocated from Puerto Rico to the state of Georgia due to a tragic car accident that led to the end of my father’s life. This sudden change of lifestyle and heartbreak came with an extreme amount of struggle and culture shock not just
As someone who has completed their degree in both Criminal Justice and Psychology, I feel this master’s track completely encompasses my passion in both fields. I aspire to be the voice for those that have a hard time or can’t express themselves. I want to be a Forensic Psychologist because I feel I embody the confidence, drive and determination it takes for someone to work in an ever-changing and demanding
That can help in assessing a situation and coping with an individual's actions. While majoring in criminology does make this course a requirement, I do feel that this course will play an important role within my future. Although I must start in law enforcement as a police officer or another entry-level position, I do plan to work my way up to a homicide detective. Throughout my career, the knowledge I gain from this course may assist me in tracking down suspects as well as criminals. This course may provide me with the ability to understand the behavior and activity of a criminal as well as piece together clues and evidence.
The Criminal Justice System is separated into three branches. Those branches are Law Enforcement, The Courts, and Corrections. The three branches can be divided even further into local, state and federal police; judges or magistrates, prosecution (pre-trial services), and probationary officials to include, corrections guards, paroling authorities, parole and probation officials The first branch is Law Enforcement. This is the first place or first encounter that someone who has committed a crime or suspected of committing a crime will start.

When an individual is accused of a crime, there are numerous steps the federal criminal justice system must take in order to serve righteousness. The steps through the federal criminal process are: investigation, charging, arraignment, discovery, plea bargaining, preliminary hearing, pre-trial motions, trial, post-trial motions, sentencing and appeal. The investigation of a crime can begin in various ways such as an officer observing a possible drunk driver speed on the highway, a 9-1-1 call stating there have been shots fired in a neighborhood or even a person stating they’ve been subject fraud. Once the investigation has begun, there are many agencies that staff criminal investigators to accumulate and provide information to attorneys in the respective district of the crime.
Origin and History of the Criminal Justice System The Criminal justice system is a system that was made to control crime and make punishments to whoever break a law or rule. The beginning of the criminal justice system of the United States goes all the way back when the United States still belonged to the Great Britain. Americans were under Great Britain laws and rules and most of the laws were unfair. After the Revolutionary War and the United States became independent and they needed to create their own types of system to run their country.
What are your professional plans once you complete the degree? I hope to use the degree I receive to gain acceptance into a DrPH program. Specifically, one focused on community and behavioral health. I hope to solve problems that are related to addiction. I want to educate communities about the realities of substance abuse and treatment.
In the criminal justice system, there are three major components. They are the police, the courts, and the corrections. Each one of the components has a role to play in the system. The police are in charge of arresting and investigating crimes. The courts are charged with the responsibility of punishing offenders while the corrections implement the court rulings.
There are three components that make up the criminal justice system – the police, courts, and correctional facilities – they all work together in order to protect individuals and their rights as a citizen of society to live without the fear of becoming the victim of a crime. Crime, simply put is when a person violates criminal law; the criminal justice system is society’s way of implementing social control. When all three components of the criminal justice work together, it functions almost perfectly. For a person to enter the criminal justice system, the process must begin with the law enforcement.
