CBA Have you ever wondered how the Makah and The Nez Perce tribes survived only using their environments. They use their environment to their advantage to get food shelter and clothing. Let’s look at the similarities and differences between the Makah and the Nez Perce tribes. Food The food of the Makah and Nez perce both get food from water. For example, in the Washington Journey textbook on page 38 paragraph 2 it says,“The Makah, Nootka, and a few other neighboring tribes harvested harvested grey whales.” “They hunted whales in large cedar canoes so well built and decorated that they became prized trade items. Ceremonial rituals were held to prepare for the hunt.” This shows that the Makah get food from the water because the Makah have to go into the water to get the whales. For instance, in the encyclopedia Coastal Indians, in the section Makah, under Buildings the text says, “Makah villages consisted of 3 to 20 flat footed longhouses that were set along the beaches. Each longhouse sheltered up to 20 families. The buildings had dirt floors and frames made of planks that could be shifted to let in air or removed and transported if the villagers moved to follow a spring salmon run. This proves that the Makah live in longhouses and not the houses that the Nez perce live in. However, in the Washington Journey textbook, the text says, “ After the early 1800s, tule houses replaced pit houses. Tule is the grass like plant that grows and swampy areas. Tall bunches of tool were cut, dried, and laid flat side by side. The ends were tied to form mats.
