1. What do you make of Edna’s plan to move out? Sensible, sustainable, brave? I believe that Edna’s plan to move out was a sensible idea. Since, she has made this choice with her own senses and believes that she is doing the right thing. When she told Mademoiselle Reisz about her idea to move into a new house, she claimed that the current house was too big and there was too much trouble. However, later she admitted that she wants freedom and independence. She predicts that she can support herself by selling her sketches and her racetrack winnings. “I won a large sum this winter on the races, and I am beginning to sell my sketches. Laidpore is more and more pleased with my work; he says it grows in force and individuality.” (Pg.293) This quote …show more content…

She never felt this feeling before and now she is embracing this feeling wit this kiss. Edna married Leonce because her parents wanted her too, she didn’t marry him because she loved him. I predict that this novel received a lot of criticism when it was published. This story is about Edna trying to protest against an oppressed society. No matter how brave and inspirational Edna’s actions were people thought she was bad news. This was 1899 when society was oppressive. Back then if someone was reading this novel I think that it would have been a negative sign or society considered it a bad influence. “The bird that would soar above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings.” (Pg.300) This quote intensely represents the theme of society and class. Furthermore, the bird is representing Edna and she has to stay strong in order to surpass …show more content…

She picked her guests through discrimination. I believe the people who got invited must have thought she was nuts because she has been acting odd lately.Disobeying her husband, going out with other men and bragging about her party. The people who got invited probably just went there to be polite. “Monsieur Ratignolle was the first to break the pleasant charm. At ten o’clock he excused himself.” (Pg.310) One by one people started to leave. Since, the atmosphere of the party was a little awkward, odd and it was really high class. It seemed these dinners were for people with an incredible amount of money. “Though Edna had spoken of the dinner as a very grand affair, it was in truth a very small affair.”(Pg.305) The party couldn’t meet Edna’s high expectations. Only 10 guests showed up. Furthermore, for a lot of guests it was the first time meeting each other. If I was in the party I would want to run away. “Monsieur Ratignolle brought himself and his wife’s excuses.” (Pg.305) In this novel Edna is living in a society which is obsessed with reputation. Mr. Ponteiller is more concerned about his own reputation than his marriage. However, his wife Edna is not worried about her own reputation. In this few chapters Edna has been considered going through a phase and people are starting to keep their distance. This quote is relating to the theme of respect and reputation. Madame Ratignolle could have gone to the
