In the poem, “Making Sarah Cry”, and the memoir “I Escaped a Violent Gang”, The theme courage is evident. In the poem “Making Sarah Cry”, Sarah shows courage because she has to push through bullying to fit in. In the passage “I Escaped a Violent Gang”, Ana shows courage because she has to figure out a way to get out of the gang and be able to live her life. Although these passages have a common theme, the moods are very different. In the passage “I Escaped A Violent Gang” There is some violence and has more action. In the poem “ Making Sarah Cry” it is less violent and doesn’t have as much action. In the poem, “Making Sarah Cry” the theme courage shows up throughout the text. In the end, all of the kids learn to accept each other, and now they play out on the playground together every day. For example, “ It took several days of teasing And a razzing from his friends, But when they saw his strength, They chose to be like him. “ I think that this quote from the passage shows courage because now he was getting bullied every day, but just like Sarah did, he fought through it. Now everyone accepts him for who he is, and they even want to be like him now! I think that the poem “Making Sarah Cry” shows the theme courage in many ways. Sarah gets bullied each day, but she fights through it each time, and everyone ends up accepting her and they teach their new friend Sarah how to play kickball. Sarah was a strong girl and she always stood up for herself and others. She ended up fitting in at the end. I think that the author wanted us to know that it doesn’t matter what you look like, you should accept people for who they truly are.
