In his article, Small Changes, Malcolm Gladwell goes in depth on the revolution of social media and its impact it has in society. In addition, Gladwell claims the threat social media has on social media because it prevents people from having face to face conversations and it leads to more interactions through the networks social media has to offer not having a strong ability to create a change in the world. As Gladwell claims, social media is the cause of this. With the active users on the networks users are able to chat, video chat and verbally talk through technology. This is not only offered through a device like a cell phone or tablet. On the Facebook application you are able to video chat and call someone through the messages which does not allow anything other than the wifi itself. There are millions of users who do not pay for a phone line because he or she has the ability to interact with another person via applications. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, reported that 400 million Facebook Messenger users are making voice and video calls every month globally (Business Insider). Gladwell’s fear of less face to face interaction can be taken into consideration. There are users that interact with each other who have never met in the real world. Social media has the ability to create false identities. It also has the ability to create numerous of lies on movements and news. However, social media also has the ability to research information through reliable sources. Afterall, during the Civil Rights movement there was no social media involved. Yet millions came together as a whole for the march. However, the Civil Rights activists spent years organizing the march which allowed it be as successful as it initially was. With the power of social media it takes as little as 30 seconds to post something to the entire universe.
