Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925 to Earl and Louise Little in Omaha, Nebraska. While living in Nebraska, his family experienced pain and persecution, so they decided to move to Michigan. When he was six years old in 1931, the Black Legion murdered his father. After his father’s death, his mother experienced a mental breakdown that caused her to be sent to the state mental hospital. Malcolm was then sent to live with another family, which separated him from his siblings. While in school, he often got in trouble and is sent to the state detention home. After he finished eighth grade in 1941, he decided to move out to Boston to live with his sister, Ella. Malcolm took a turn for the worst when he got out to Boston. Then one day, his brother, Reginald, gave Malcolm the idea to join the Nation on Islam and become a Black Muslim, a group that was founded by Elijah Muhammad. After being in prison for seven years, Malcolm was granted parole. While on parole, he moved to Detroit to live with his brother Wilfred. Then inspired by the Black Muslims, Malcolm Little changed his name to Malcolm X, which represented the lost name of his African ancestors. While in Detroit, he worked at an automobile factory, but soon quit to go to Chicago to study under Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm and Elijah became very close while he studied under him and became the head minister at a Harlem temple. While serving his congregation, he met his a woman who later became his wife. Together they had four daughters. The Nation of Islam is then thrown in the spotlight after a member gets assaulted. Malcolm X then receives a lot of publicity and is seen in the media quite often.
