As William Golding once said, “Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us.” Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding and was published in 1954. During a war, a plane with british school boys crashes down on an ungoverned island. The boys try to mimic the adult with laws and rules but not all of them agree. They are put through situations that reveal the true capacity of man. Golding's novel depicts the flaw of man and modern society. Golding's shows man's need for order and balance through the conch. In the novel, it states, “There aren't any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves… We’ll have rules! Lots of Rules!” (Golding 33) When we are put through a situation in which something tragic happens, we need people to cooperate and also follow certain rules in order to survive, and we look upon the adults help for a sense of guidance and security. Throughout history and even now of today we rely on rules in order to keep us civilized and also survive. Ralph says, “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak… And he won’t be interrupted. Except by me.” (Golding 33). In a democratic government people have the right to express their opinions and say what they want without being tormented. Democracy is governed in real-life situations with how citizens vote for the rules of society. We use democracy in our government because it seems like the reasonable thing to do so people have a right to choose, but democracy tends to fall apart as leaders want more power. Golding shows us that children need guidance and direction because without adults they will fall into the abyss of inescapable problems. We all have our innate ability of savagery in us and we can not control it. Mankind will never be perfect, it will always have flaws. If a person fully educated their self they will be capable of understanding how to survive and also lead others towards the right direction and that can be the hope for mankind;
