Gender is being female or male through social and cultural differences instead of biological ones. Anthropologists have developed the term cultural construction of gender, which refers to how each gender is raised to think and act like that gender. We are given names, clothes, and haircuts to reflect our genders; “Gender is taught, learned, and enforced” (Guest 273). However, a person’s sex does not determine if they act more masculine or more feminine in the general sense, just based on their reproductive system. A good example on gender ideologies/roles from the book would be the story of Man the Hunter, Woman the Gatherer (Guest 294). Sexuality is viewed as the most natural thing in the world, because animals also do it. However, research on the topic has pointed out that human sexuality is different based on how animals mate just for reproduction and part ways, while humans mate and invest themselves into their partner to raise the offspring (Guest 312). Other examples like how animals have sex when the female is ovulating or how female animals are fertile throughout their entire lifetime. Sexuality may have to do with human evolution, being that for example, homosexuality is purely for pleasure because men with men or women with women cannot reproduce. Culture creates a society’s views on sexuality by stating what is normal or natural. Globalization impacts sex and gender by time-space compression. This is the movement of people, normally men, across countries and borders in search of sexual pleasure. Also, gay and lesbian rights in western cultures are expanding and shaping global conversation about sexuality (Guest 337). Sex tourism is when travel companies provide a cover for tourists to seek sexual pleasure in other countries, and this actually does not benefit anyone in that visited country. Women also travel to provide sex work for these tourists. For example, in the Dominican Republic, the money used for the sex tourism never reaches the hotels or other areas of interest. (Guest 338). Also, for the sex workers, prostitution is illegal and not regulated properly so there is no legal protection or they become victims of extortion through the police. Globalization can be a good thing, but in cases like this, and for the women, it is just a way to meet a living and does not benefit the country
