Health care has been a major challenge in the past until now with increasing population and increasing demand for new and improved method of delivering health care. Major among these challenges was the issue of the cost of healthcare. In the past some interventions had been put in place to meet cost challenges in accessing health care. This meant that when a worker for instance, was ill and could not afford to pay the cost of accessing health care, he or she could not return to work for as long as the individual was not well. A better option for employers to keep their work force healthy and maintain them was to secure a means of making it easier for them to access healthcare and return to work healthy. Employers of firms in order to retain their worker opted for managed care package for their workers to enable them receive treatment without having to make an out of pocket payment before receiving health care. This need gave way to the creation of new models for the provision and payment of healthcare services besides payment of services by patients, through contracted companies which charged a pre set fee per individual member for the provisions of health care services through its facilities and human resource by the combining delivery and …show more content…
This involved the payment of contracted community doctors and hospitals to provide healthcare to its members as well as people who were not covered by insurance plans. These non-profit operation plans in the past did contribute greatly to helping people who had no means to pay for their health care needs. Today, many people are not on any kind of health insurance scheme and do not also contribute to the affordable health care scheme either probably because they are not well resourced to do that or for some reasons do not believe in putting money into a scheme for future benefits when the money they make is not sufficient to sustain them.
Today, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans for health care still exist in America providing help through health aid to many underprivileged people and people who are not covered by any form of health insurance. These essentials in the early period health care are still grounded in today’s managed care system with a more improved and expanded coverage of the less privileged in society. This has helped in a major way to close up the gap in health care access between the poor who cannot afford healthcare and the rich who can afford.
