A school uniform is a specific set of clothes that students wear for school, primarily elementary and secondary school. Public school students should not be required to wear uniforms. They do not wear uniforms now, and should not have to in the future. Mandatory uniforms will allow people to see the student for their personality and who they are, rather than just the types of clothes they wear. It will reduce the bullying caused by styling choices and brand names, and allow the student to go to school and focus on schoolwork without having to worry about fashion. It also saves parents the cost of buying many different outfits for their kids, as they will be wearing a particular set of clothes five days a week. In addition to this, uniforms will make it easier to identify unwanted or dangerous intruders in the school, and consequently build a safer community. However, there are a number of reasons why uniforms should not be enforced in public schools, one of them being that students will be able to learn to dress appropriately and work efficiently without depending on the type of clothes they wear, similar to what they will do after high school. It will allow them to realize that often times bullying has nothing to do with the clothes one is wearing and instead may have to do with personality and attitude, just as how they will learn to express themselves through means other than clothing even if they are allowed to wear whatever they want. Furthermore, a uniform would nullify the promise of free education. Uniforms cost a lot up front and are expensive to replace. Low income families may be unable to afford it, especially those who live from paycheck to paycheck. Therefore, a uniform does not reduce costs because the uniform will not be worn on regular days and will just be a school exclusive set of clothes.
