Manganese resources of East Tennessee.
In 1940 Tennessee was a second largest producer of manganese in the United States. (walter f. Pond, state geologist, 1942)

INTRODUCTION
The first manganese mining in the united states was done in Tennessee, near Whitefield, Hickman County, in 1837 (Harder, 1910, pp. 72-76)
This is near the Western Highland Rim. The production of manganese was not very high until 1915. At the time became the main region of mining for manganese .
During World War 1 over 120 mines opened up in East Tennessee.
By 1938 production of manganese increased more than 4,000 tons.
Because of the war in 1939 production of the ore increased 2 over 7300 tons.

All commercial deposits are of sedimentary origin, not Precambrian .
Manganese is usually exist in clay residual, In East Tennessee, from formations consisting of sandstone , chert, dolomite,, quartzite, shale, and marble.
Psilomelane is the most profitable and important manganese mineral in east tn. It is also the most important from a commercial standpoint.
Is dark blue color color going to grayish black .
2nd in commercial value is pyrolusite. This mineral is thought to have been deposited by ground water carrying manganese.
But the source of this manganese is not known.
Manganese is also found in Wad.
It's of little economic importance bc it's hard economic value when separation occurs.
Manganese is also found in the mineral manganite.
Because it resembles needle like crystals when broken open.
Another mineral that contains manganese is hausmannite. This occurs in several mines in Cleveland Tennessee and the specimens are of high grade ore.
George i Whitlatch describes the value of manganese classified into chemical and metallurgical
