In the 19th century, America was growing more rapidly than it had in the past. Cities were multiplying in size wealthy places and the slums. From the popularity of cities to rural areas the need for land was high. Only so many people grasping for land meant someone had to go either the Natives or the Americans had to to do what they could with their own land. A philosophy of Manifest Destiny was brought forth but with a catch that expansionism could be seen as imperialism instead. Imperialism and Manifest Destiny side by side have distinguishing similarities and differences demonstrated in the 19th century yet both are more comparably similar than different. Imperialism is the expansion of a nation to other lands that hasn't been part of the original nation and acquiring them through either intimidation, force or otherwise wealth. The Spanish American War is an valid example of Imperialism because it demonstrates how America took action towards Spanish acquired lands and took it by force. Another example of imperialism is when in the mid 19th century gold was found in California where America had already established reservation sites for Indians. Both of the philosophies involve someway acquiring foreign land whether voluntarily or not. In most cases of Manifest Destiny and Imperialism the attempt at trying to conform the foreigners into assimilating into American culture does occur. Whether it be imperialism and big businesses trying to get more labor for underpaid jobs or Manifest destiny and "Christians" trying to do God's work, each does it. Manifest Destiny does have some differences it is actually similar to Imperialism and vice versa. Either way each has to have some kind of power to accomplish getting lands that were not originally theirs to
