Manifest Destiny By: Logan Magarro Imagine that you were fighting in the Mexican-American War and people were dying around you because they were trying to fight for your land. There were over 25,000 Mexican soldiers that died during the Mexican-American War, and about half of those people who died had a family like you. So tell me, do you think it was fair for James K. Polk to provoke the Mexicans to go to war? The Americans were not justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas illegally revolted from Mexican authority, Polk provoked the Mexican military, and Manifest Destiny was made up as a way to promote the expansion to promote slavery. One piece of evidence to support this is, “The philosophy drove 19th-century U.S. territorial expansion and was used to justify the forced removal of Native Americans and other groups from their homes. The rapid expansion of the United States intensified the issue of slavery as new states were added to the Union, leading to the outbreak of the Civil War. (History 12)” Another piece of evidence is, that “Manifest Destiny allowed for slavery to expand to Texas, and the Kansas-Nebraska controversy over slavery was fueled by their acquisition as territories, which only occurred because of Manifest Destiny. (UShistory.org)” Manifest Destiny was made up as a way to promote the expansion of slavery. Texas and America realized they could just take more of Mexico’s land, and that is what they did. We now have Arizona, Nevada, California, New Mexico, and Utah because America decided they wanted that land. This is extremely unfair for Mexico to just get their land taken because their military isn’t as strong as America’s is. Sure it is great to have these US states, but to unrightfully take it out of Mexico’s hands is not
