In order for me to properly answer the question above, I must first examine both the Protestant ethic and Manifest Destiny. I must also explore the values and culture of early settlers and later settlers and well as the political and social values that a mixture of people brought to their society by the frontier and also how commerce developed between the colonies and Europe. The Protestant ethic, or Protestantism, is a branch of The Catholic Church. Protestants believe that their talents were gifts from God so that they could use them to the most of their abilities. The Protestant ethic contributes to Manifest Destiny because they share the vision of spreading their ‘beliefs’ and making an effort so that the majority of people as possible can be affected by it since they both have a sense of duty/calling. The majority of the first settlers were protestant, while only a few were catholic. There was a large anti-catholic movement that restricted catholics from doing some things during these times because of the puritans. These puritans, who seeked to purify catholics from their beliefs, were large in numbers throughout all the Colonies. The socio-economic status of the people living in the colonies varied quite a lot. While there were some extremely rich people like plantation owners and extremely poor people like African slaves. Although there was no longer slavery in the north, after some time of battling for rights, in the south the slave trade continued because it was what kept the economy from crumbling. The protestant ethic has to do with this because it’s the code that people followed and they wouldn’t do anything that was against their moral code, and this can be noticed in the early settlers and the later settlers as well. Even though people were divided by a socio-economic gap, they were somewhat united by their ideals, beliefs, and objectives.
