Traveling the world over 800 years ago, in the medieval era, was extremely challenging, with many parts of the world yet to be discovered. The world was thought to be flat, with stories about people falling off the edge... and that is where we find our hero. Marco Polo, an adventurous Venetian born in 1254 who travelled the world until his death in early 1324. In 1271, Marco Polo set out with his father and uncle, both travelling merchants, on an epic journey of Europe, the Far East and Asia. The route the Polos took was similar to the track of the ancient Silk Road, a complex network of trade routes that gave people the chance to exchange goods and culture. They tr¬¬¬avelled on donkeys, horses and camels; across mountains, deserts and through ancient towns. After 24 years and 24 000 km they returned to Venice with riches and treasures, stories of far off lands and innovative ideas on technologies. Marco Polo was one of the first Europeans to travel the Silk Road to China and was the first European traveller to write of the region.

It started being used in Venice years after Marco Polo returned. Marco Polos exploring not only gave him infinite wealth but it introduced the Western world to China their inventions and that is what truly makes him a hero. Marco Polo had been travelling 3 years with his father and uncle when he first meets Kublai Khan the Emperor of Mongol. Kublai Khan was the grandson of Ghanis Kan and was the first emporer of Chinas Yuan dynasty.
