Thesis: Marcus Aurelius the “good” emperor of the Roman world. Marcus Aurelius- The earlier life of Marcus Aurelius shaped his future greatly. Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome at the time of 121 (lendering 1) originally named after his father , Marcus Annius Verus, Marcus later changed his name after he was adopted by his uncle Antonius. (Mark 1) Hadrians encouraged Antonius to adopt Marcus so “he may have an heir to rule the Roman Empire.” (Mark1) After Marcus was adopted his life became more complicated as he juggled relationships, his education, and running the Roman Empire. A. Marcus contributed to the peace in Rome and contributed many positive achievements. He was recognized as the last good emperor. 1. in the beginning of the second century five so-called “good emperors came to power,marcus being the last of them. 5 “good emperors” (national geo 159) these emperors created a period of peace and Prosperity known as the pax romana- the Roman Peace (national Geo 159) few were like Marcus in the learning and refinement in possessed , power and pomp little to him. his passion was for justice. (Jones 1-2) Although he sought to improve the lives of Romans during his reign, Rome was not without war. Anyone who threatened Romes way of life were considered an enemy. It was a tiresome task dealing with a new religious sect known as Christians, who refused to take part in honoring the gods of the state. Aurelius persecuted early Christians. Though harsh to modern day understanding, they were considered necessary in order to maintain order in Rome. (Mark 2) Marcus Aurelius was considered a great emperor.
