Emperors were rulers of many empires and those who ruled had different ideas of how to rule people. The ones chosen to rule was said to be Gods will and people who opposed this idea were killed. Emperors were fear but also love around the world, one of those emperors was Marcus Aurelius born in a wealthy family he was chosen by Emperor Hadrian to be his successor. Marcus Aurelius was the most power and respected roman emperor of all time.
Marcus Aurelius was born on April 26th and he was dedicated to study philosophy, Latin and Greek and at the age of 19, he grown an interest in politics becoming consul of the Roman senate as year past, he became more knowledgeable and his duties as a leader grown. Denman, Jr. is a Roman marble sculpture from AD 140-150 and it was created to idealize Marcus Aurelius showing him young and with power. Aurelius is in a pronounce contrapposto showing him as an ultimate ruler that had no fear. He is shown with no cloth except for a gown, however he is portrait naked meaning that that he was proud and open to the people. In Roman art men are always portrait naked because the body was beauty and Marcus Aurelius was the perfect men. Aurelius is holding a “cayado” (cane) like the one Moises used this may symbolize that God is giving him power to rule. He has the Augustan classism smile to capture the viewers’ attention and tell that he had power over anyone also his head is tilted up and turned like he was looking to the people as giving a speech in contrast with verism that show the individual wrinkles . The sculpture is shown as a young individual this symbolizes wealth and health meaning that Aurelius was ready to rule. We can compare this sculpture to Augustus of Primaporta because both rulers hold a cayado (cane) and are looking toward the people meaning that both were absolute rulers over the
