Marcus Junius Brutus, also known as Quintus Caepo Brutus, was a powerful political figure in the Roman Republic. His mother was a lover to Julius Caesar and his father was a highly respected figure in the republic. In the year 85 B.C., Brutus was born in Rome. His father died in battle when he was only nine years old. Brutus was raised by his uncle who helped him get involved in politics. Brutus had married a woman named Claudia whom he later divorced so that he could marry a different woman named Porcia. Later on, Brutus opposed Julius Caesar in the Roman Civil War and was captured at the end of it. Caesar pardoned Brutus and allowed him to govern the Cisalpine Gaul from 45 B.C. to 47 B.C. Following this, Brutus was appointed the position of city praetor along with Gaius Cassius Longinus. Brutus had a connection with Julius Caesar through his mother that made Caesar almost treat him like a son. Cassius convinced Brutus to help lead a conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar. They both rallied up around 60 senate members in total to assist them in attacking Caesar. Brutus was able to get so many people involved because of his honorable reputation. During a gathering of the senate, the mass of senators surrounded Caesar and drew their daggers on him. Julius Caesar initially resisted the assault, but when he saw Brutus with his dagger drawn, he covered his eyes and accepted defeat. Brutus, along with other Roman politicians, successfully betrayed and assassinated Julius Caesar. Following this event, Rome broke out into another civil war. Cassius was defeated in battle during this war and took his own life. After Cassius' suicide, Octavian beat Brutus' forces in The Second Battle of Phillipi, and Brutus also killed himself.
