On November 18, 1939, Margaret was born in Ottawa, Canada. Margaret Atwood, a Canadian writer, is known for her incredible novels and poetry. Her works of literature are mainly concentrated on women’s issues and entitlement. “At the age of six, the family moved to northern Ontario because her father was an entomologist” (Magill 86). Northern Ontario has also been featured in many of her works and is known as one of her favorite places to revisit. It is also known as her country place (Magill 86). There are also a lot of other references to geography in various poems that she wrote. In The Moment, she clarifies that this Earth belongs to nature and that we, human beings, should respect that. While Margaret was in high school, she was inspired by some of her teachers to write. After high school, she attended Victoria College and graduated in 1961 (Applebee 1233). She first started to get recognized and noticed for her works in the 1960’s, after she completed many novels. One of her collections of poetry called “The Circle Game,” was her first publication in 1966. In the same year, she received the Governor-General’s Award for “The Circle Game” (Fajardo 1). Margaret has received two of these awards and it is known as Canada’s highest honor to obtain. In 1974, she received the Bess Hokin Prize for her works of poetry, the Canadian Booksellers Association Award in 1977 and in 1980, she won the Radcliffe Medal. The main idea of this poem is to make people aware of our human relationship with nature. The structure of The Moment is a sestet, which contains three stanzas with six lines in each. The rhyme scheme of this poem is free verse, meaning that there are no words that rhyme (Fajardo 2). In the first stanza, I believe that the author is trying to make the character recognize all the hard work and dedication that they have done throughout the years. In lines 5-6: “knowing at last how you got there, and say, I own this,” the author wants them to understand how they got to where they are today and to realize how their hard work has eventually paid off. In the second stanza, I feel that the author wants to show us how we are harming nature. In lines 7-10: “Is the same moment the trees unloose their soft arms from around you, the birds take back their language, the cliffs fissure and collapse,” explains that nature is no longer welcoming nor comforting us. I have also taken into consideration that the landmarks are deteriorating and breaking because we have taken advantage of what nature has to offer us. In the final stanza, I understand that the main idea that it wants us to know, as humans, is that we will never own nature and that nature was here on this Earth first.
