Counts v Cedarville School District is a case that happened in 2002, in Cedarville Arkansas. This case is an example of a school board trying to censor a certain book in the school’s library. A parent complained about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, saying that the book teaches children that parents, teachers and rules are “stupid” and to be ignored. She also argued that the book teaches children such things as “good witches” and “good magic” (Grogan). The library committee voted unanimously to keep the book and series in the library but the school board overturned the ruling and voted 3-2 in favor of removing the series off of the libraries shelves.
Lyddie’s working conditions in the factory are unsafe and dangerous. Even the factory building was unsafe. “... A girl had slipped on the icy staircase in the rush to dinner. ”(101) .The machines were very big and dangerous.
In the short story, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” written by Karen Russell, a pack of wolf girls leave their home in the woods for St. Lucy’s in order to be able to live in human society. Within the story, Russell has included epigraphs before each stage from The Jesuit Handbook for Lycanthropic Culture Shock. This handbook was for the nuns at St. Lucy’s to help guide their students. Karen Russell included the epigraphs, short quotations at the beginning of a chapter intended to suggest a theme, from the handbook to help the reader understand what the characters might be feeling or how they will act in a certain stage. In Stage One, the epigraph closely relates to the characters’ development, yet doesn’t consider that the girls could be fearful in their new home due to interactions with the nuns.
In the midst of a terrible time of war between Loyalists and Patriots, sixteen year old Sybil Ludington helped save the lives of her family and fellow Patriot citizens. The British were trying to take over the city of Danbury, but this young, brave girl took matters into her own hands, assisting in ways no one would have imagined. Sybil, the daughter of Colonel Henry Ludington, stood her ground to protect her family and city. With a reward on his head, the British were trying to capture the Colonel, who was a Patriot and the commander of the local militia. Being warned by her sister that men were charging toward their house, Sybil quickly took action fearing that the British would attack once they discovered her father was not home.

There were always questions such as, “what is going to happen next?” or “I wonder why this is happening.” Every question has an answer and all of mine were solved throughout the entire following of the writing.
Throughout her narrative, Rowlandson employs the use of harsh diction in order to paint the Natives as barbarous and uncivilized. People who endure dislocation feel out of place and have many mixed emotions. Karen Russell’s “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” tells the story of a group of girls who suffer from lycanthropy including Jeanette, Claudette, and Mirabella. The “pack” of girls go through many stages to rehabilitate to their human identity. The girls experience culture shock and have to work as they progress through the stage.
Again, her father’s encouragement and “difficult smile which adults seek to conceal pain from children” is an example of the world’s imperfection that other kids in Vanessa’s age will not fully comprehend yet. Vanessa’s discovery about Grandmother MacLeod’s past disappointments, and broken dreams is one of the reasons on how she arrives to her conclusion about how life is not orderly. By spending time with her, she notices something that she is unaware of before--the things that her grandmother went through that made her who she is
Flannery O 'Connor was born in Savannah Georgia on March 25, 1925, as an only child. Her mother had to assume most of the responsibility of raising Flannery because her father died of lupus when she was fifteen. Flannery attended the Georgia State College for Women, and then went to the State University in Iowa where she received her master in Fine Arts (Gooch). Flannery’s life was very short, died at the age of 39, as she struggled with lupus, the same incurable disease that claimed the life of her father. O’Conner family was devoutly Catholic, which would influence her work and her outlook in life a great deal.
In Karen Russell’s short story, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves”, she develops the progression of the characters in relation to The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock. The characters, young girls raised as if they were wolves, are compared to the handbook with optimism that they will adapt to the host culture. The girls’ progression in the five set stages are critical to their development at St. Lucy’s. The author compares Claudette, the narrator, to the clear expectations the handbook sets for the girls’ development. Claudette’s actions align well with the five stages, but she has outbursts that remind her of her former self.
This embodies not only the wind but also the urban setting as a location that will make you feel very vulnerable and unsafe. By the end of this selection the author finally speaks of Lutie directly and explains her specific thoughts towards the city. For instance, “cold fingers of the wind” personifies this city as very overwhelming and as if Lutie would much rather be anywhere
“We read it for months, so many times that the book became tattered and sweat stained, it lost its spine, came unearthed, sections fell apart […] but we loved it dearly” (68). Reading created joy between the girls, strengthening their friendship and their will to escape the encompassing darkness of the neighbourhood. Each moment spent reading in the courtyard was one where they could be children, creating an inseparable bond. There was no worry of the past becoming present, in fact, the book drove them to desire a better future. Little Women provided a luminosity from the injustices they suffered, like Lila’s inability to continue her education.

Individuals are usually judged by their superficial appearances and not by their characteristics, which could cause a wrong perception of an individual true self-leading their status and identity to become an outcast from the society. Furthermore, it could lead an individual to have psychological effects on their mental health. For instance, it could lead an individual to obtain the feelings of emptiness and hopelessness, to conclude with a decision to commit suicide. Margaret Atwood’s short story, “Lusus Naturae,” is written in a first person perspective, in which the protagonist tells the story herself. The readers of the story are able to know what is going on in the protagonist mind and how she is feeling throughout the story.
