Statistically, African American women in the United States suffer from complications or death 243 percent more than white women during maternity. This is a common occurrence that many women and children face, but shouldn’t have too. Rebecca Skloots book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, is an example of the inequality shown to African-American women in the medical world. Specifically, the unequal medical care Henrietta Lacks received, which many other black women experienced. In her book, Skloot suggests that African-American women suffer from psychological effects after receiving unequal medical care, do not receive equal medical treatment during maternity, and are more likely to die from maternal complications.
Both of these men were contemporaries and without a doubt their personal experiences and perhaps the overall black experience in the United States guided their conscious to adopt certain strategies and tactics in order to uplift black people politically, economically and socially. This is where these two leaders fundamentally disagreed, which was followed by suspicion, name calling, distrust and an unwillingness to concede and perhaps recognize the strengths and weaknesses that existed in both of their philosophies. They were divided and they left black America divided and yet their arguments are still highly debated in academic circles and laypersons circles alike throughout America. Lastly, this research study is limited in scope and has not met all the academic restraints consistent with a scholarly paper, nevertheless, at the same time, it will display objectivity and sound research methods by briefly exploring in an unscientific manner, the slave plantation personalities (giving in the seminal study by John Blassigame) and how perhaps those historical values—culture) impacted slave behavior, as well shaped black personalities that proceeded from this peculiar institution.
Back then, there was discrimination against black people and many embraced white supremacy. There weren’t any black doctors and there certainly wasn’t fairness for those of color suffering from illness from infectious diseases to cancer. Nonetheless, doctors took advantage of Henrietta Lacks and her cells by not properly informing the family and speaking to them in a way that was comprehensive. Given the circumstances, discrimination was rampant in that era. Black people were content by simply receiving treatment after all, “Doctors knew best, and most patients didn’t question that” (Sloot 63).
Booker T Washington writes the book “Up From Slavery”; in this book, he writes about being born a slave and growing up battling to get his education after the Civil War. He talks about the battle and speeches he had given to try to express the necessity of the Negros to be equal. “I tried to emphasize the fact that while the Negro should not be deprived by unfair means of the franchise…and that no race without these elements could permanently succeed.” (Washington 208). Washington is saying that many Negros were denied rights due to their color, and in fact, he felt that the Congress should help out.

For instance, the colored received less than stellar entertainment where as the whites were able to get anything they wanted, “There, instead of houses and trees, there were fishing wharves, boat docks, nightclubs, and restaurants for whites. There were one or two nightclubs for colored, but they were not very good” (Gaines 25). It was unjust to the blacks that they could not enjoy themselves as much as the whites because of their skin color.
