Kasey Takusagawa Langton May 23rd, 2023 A Thousand Splendid Suns While many characters go through various changes, Mariam goes through the biggest and most noticeable changes. Each character goes through their problems and hardships and everybody changes along the way. Whether it is the way they think, act, or look. One way Mariam’s change was shown was when Mariam goes down to get a drink but runs into a baby that was not being properly taken care of. Mariam says, “Look at you. What a sorry sight you are, dressed like a damn boy. And all bundled up in this heat. No wonder you’re still awake.” (Khaled Hosseini 243) Mariam used to be a person who minds their own business and stood quiet. This scene shows how she takes action for the things she cares about. She even cares for others even though the child is not hers and takes charge as the mother who was supposed to take care of the baby. Another way Mariam’s change was made evident was when Mariam goes to the hospital for Laila’s baby and tries to shove other people to get treated earlier and realizes what Nana had to go through and changes the way she thinks about Nana. Mariam says, “I’ve killed our husband. I’ve deprived your son of his father. It isn’t right that I run.” (Khaled Hosseini 358) This scene showed that Mariam no longer cared about the consequences of killing her husband. Mariam now only cared about how she could get Laila and her kids out of the house and the area to get them away from danger. Mariam goes from a self-centered quiet girl to this person who would kill a person just for a person she loves so that that person and their kids would get out of trouble
