Marianne Moore’s Poetic Influences A person’s life and way of see the world are ultimately shaped by the many events around him or her. In the case of twentieth-century poet, Marianne Moore, a multitude of events in her life impacted the way she wrote her poetry and caused her to begin writing poetry. Moore was able to develop a method of writing that made her poems distinct when compared to other poets of her time, such as T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. Her writing style and inspiration for her poems were formed through influences such as her Presbyterian upbringing, growing up without a father, being close with her mother, moving to New York City, and the time period she lived in. While Moore’s upbringing was influential, an essential turning point in Moore 's poetic career was when she and her mother moved to New York City in the 1920s (Oswald and Gale). This movement is what mainly sparked Moore 's career, as she was in the heart of publishers, writers, and editors. “Most of Moore 's poems published between 1918 and 1921 are either meditation on perspective and artistic vision or are direct seeings,” (Heuving). Heuving discusses how Moore 's style is enlightened during this time when she moved to New York. This movement emerged Moore into her poems, and she was exposed to more ideas. Moving to New York caused Moore to create her signature style of isolation, even though she was around so many diverse poets. “She does not consider herself to be writing as a poet. She sees herself rather as an interested observer, one who is separated from poetry,” (Slatin).
