The book I am reading is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. I predict that the author will explore the human rights issue of Immigration Laws and the plight of illegal aliens in the United States. I believe that this issue will be important in the story because Enrique the main character in the story is very driven to find his mother who has gone herself illegally to the United States to earn money to provide an education for her children and to better the life of her family. I made this prediction because Lourdes leaves her children in Honduras as she goes to make money in the United States and her son Enrique is left saying “Donde esta mi mami?” “Where is my mom?”
The lack of proper English and understanding of the American culture was a huge problem for those working in sweatshops in Los Angeles, emphasized profoundly by Shipler. These individuals were unable to escape the low wages they were receiving for many reasons, including lack of English or fear of being deported. A consequential result of language barriers and immigration also affects the ability to obtain proper health care for families and children. In chapter eight, Shipler writes, “ Many legal immigrants are reluctant to accept food stamps or Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, to which they may be entitled, because they are afraid they will be judged ‘public charges’ and therefore be denied permanent residence leading to citizenship” (Shipler, 207). This is a great example of how families are not receiving benefits they deserve due to fear of deportation or not gaining citizenship.
Maria Tallchief had parts in some ballet routines specifically choreographed for her. Some including Firebird, the Nutcracker and Swan Lake (4). Maria Tallchief became famous through hard work (opinion).
although Lourdes reached a rough period in her life while prostituting she still remained focused about providing for a better life for children as well as herself. She used her strengths to overcome these challenges and did not let her environment change the mindset of why she came to America. Under these circumstances life can be hard and Lourdes seems like she needs help from a social worker or local agency she can trust that would not continue to take her money. Lourdes should research these agencies first before deciding to use them because of her past experiences with fraudulent agencies.
In Bucknell University’s production of Marisol by Jose Rivera, one of the central themes is chaos and the effects of chaos. This theme of chaos is in part seen through the inconsistent timeline of the play. Chaos is also seen through the development of the main characters Marisol, June, and Lenny. Jose Rivera’s purpose in writing about chaos is to parallel the real life experiences of so many people before and even now that live the lives of his characters in Marisol. The chaos is present to give voice to the real people who lived in uncertainty, enduring the insane events of the play.
Have you ever thought what it felt to be a young 11 year old in a war in Africa all alone without his family? Salva is an eleven year old boy from the Dinka tribe in South Sudan. Salva experienced one of the worst things that could happen to a kid, his family being torn apart by war. The war took place between June 5, 1983 and January 9, 2005. It took mostly in South Sudan because the muslim government wanted the tribes to practice the muslim religion.
In Timothy Matovina’s article, there have been parishes that has “enabled women to exercise greater leadership and authority” (“Our Lady Of Guadalupe: Patroness Of América” 11). Our Lady of Guadalupe has definitely given power to these women to fight for equal gender roles in the Church. Through Guadalupe’s blessing, Esther Rodriguez says, “Guadalupe gives you [women] dignity to go places you haven’t been before” (“Our Lady Of Guadalupe: Patroness Of América” 11). “Matrifocal” (Sager 10) also involves the Madonna where she is not only the “Mother of God” (Sager 10), but the “spiritual mother of the people” (Sager 10). Our Lady of Guadalupe cares for her people just like any mother would care for her children.
Two Sisters, Two Americas is a brilliant article by Brooke Ross that illustrates the life of a family with a mixed-status and what should be done about it. Many people agree that an illegal immigration reform is necessary however people can’t seem to agree on what needs to be done about it. The issue about the immigration reform has created many fights between democrats and Republicans and although both sides think something needs to be done they can’t agree on what to do. Although most people don’t seem to realize is that illegal immigrants are people like us who are trying to find safety and better opportunities. It is clear that illegal immigrants need some pathway to becoming a citizen.
Mariela’s parents did not want her to leave the family to go work even though her family needed the money. Because her family didn’t have enough money to sway Mariela into staying she moved in with her aunt and began work as a live-in domestic worker. Part of the money Mariela made working was sent back to her family to support them financially. Because Mariela’s brother, Eduardo, got a job and was able to support their family with his work, Mariela moved back home. When Mariela moved to Cancun to work as a live-out domestic servant, she was able to convince her parents to let her stay.
False Maria which was given the birth by the crazy scientist in Metropolis, is not just a simple robot. It, or should have called her, has already become a motif. In fact, in the history of film, a great number of female robot images existed. By looking through these movies, it is easy to find that the concept of False Maria is keep changing. One of the main protagonists, Mama, is telling her son the reasons for what she did to help her family’s struggle. The issue is about immigration in the United States, about how immigrants are coming into the country every year and it seems not to stop. Year after year, it has become a major problem in the U.S, that they ask
Maria Concepcion”, a short story by Katherine Anne Porter, revolves around the seemingly simple life of Maria Concepcion. At the beginning of the short story, Maria is married to a man who goes by the name of Juan and has a child on the way. She has a stable business by selling different animals, and life seemed to be on the right track. That is until Juan leaves Maria for two years with a fifteen-year-old beekeeper named Maria Rosa. Concepcion carries on with her life after tragedy hits her time and time again.
The poem “Cinderella” by Anne Sexton is about a girl who finds her prince charming. In this poem it is told in a different way then I remember it is a lot more gruesome and gory. Cinderella lives with her father, stepmother, and stepsisters and they treat her as a servant. She has to clean, cook, and do all of their chores. When she wishes to go to the ball the evil stepmother tries to load her down with chores, but Cinderella has a white dove that is her guardian angel.
This shows that immigrants are struggling to cull cultures and new environment. Richard Rodriguez, also states “ I was talking to the Laotian kids about why they don’t like the Mexican kids ( Rodriguez ). This also relates because Ms. Tran also said, because of her race, she did not get along well with others. This shows that assimilation is also one of the most significant problems that immigrants face. Others may say that discrimination is the most significant problem.
