As Marie Osmond said, “I don’t play politics; I don’t do that. I think there’s too many celebrities out there claiming what they believe. I think it’s our job to get people out to study the issues and to know what they believe and what they vote for”. It is sad that not a lot of celebrities think the same way Marie Osmond does about politics. Good morning honourable judges, my fellow competitors, ladies and gentlemen. Today’s world is dominated by the media. The younger generation has been constantly bombarded with different information, whether it be true or false. One of the main contributors to this are Celebrities. Celebrities should not be permitted to use their public platform to make political statements for the following reasons. Celebrities are out of touch with reality. They have been detached from financial problems for years because of their wealth. In addition to that, celebrities often get ahead of themselves. They hear one side of the story and goes straight to the press without double checking their information. Jane Fonda is an excellent example of this. She was against the pipelines due to the effects it has on the environment and the First Nations. She failed to notice Canada’s economy which was low at the time and Fort McMurray had recently faced a devastating natural disaster. Canada pushed through with the pipelines in order to stimulate the economy and create jobs for people. She misinformed many people by going straight to the media with her one sided information instead of looking further into the issue.
