Small organizations, local farms, and individual growers resent the big dispensaries and larger industry marijuana growers because of competition. However, the resentment is more of fear because smaller marijuana growers and the cities/towns they live, in most cases rely heavily on marijuana as the main source of income. There are now towns/cities that cannot operate without marijuana, and there are stores that sell goods that cater to marijuana growers. Prop 19 which legalized marijuana by federal law is very important among growers, specifically the larger marijuana corporations and dispensaries who are pro-supportive. Mainly Mendocino County is focused on but the article does mention Oakland, and the Bay Area. Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity are known as the “Emerald Triangle”. The year the information is gathered from is 2010. In the 1970s, people who lived/moved to Ukiah believed in living off the land and grew vegetables. This first generation of homesteaders had important life skills and dreamed of living comfortably with a house and family. Really they only grew Marijuana as a side crop because marijuana home grown was deemed not as good as marijuana exported from Mexico. However, that soon changed when Mexico started using pesticides on marijuana that was poisonous to humans around the mid-1970s. Because people needed a new source of marijuana, people started looking at the growers in California. Growers in Mendocino County were now making $1,000 a pound. The rising price of marijuana changed Mendocino County because stores started selling products catered and specialized for growers. The growers were growing more marijuana and made marijuana the main focus of income. It also revived old ideas such as “organic food, localism, and sustainability”. Not only did marijuana brought income it also brought in Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP). CAMP would go into town, confiscate marijuana and raid homes.
