Educational Background and Contributions

Born on December 14, 1948, Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams is a specialist in cognition and education (Wikipedia, 2016). Holding a Ph.D. from Brown University in cognitive and developmental psychology, Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams is internationally regarded for research and work in cognition and education. She is also a recipient of the American Educational Research Association Sylvia Scribner Award for outstanding research. Some of her contributions include the landmark book, Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print (Scholastic, 2017). She also co-authored Phonemic Awareness in Young Children. Research clearly states that phonemic awareness can be developed with direct instruction and it will significantly accelerate a child’s reading and writing achievement. The structure of language aids in building phonemic awareness and the child’s classroom teacher should be knowable in this area. Biological and environmental reasons do play a role in speech sound production (WETA, 2017).

According to WETA, Reading Rockets (2017), Marilyn Jager Adams outlines five basic types of phonemic awareness tasks tutors can perform with children.

1. Rhyme and Alliteration

§ Listen for the two words that rhyme in a string of words like cat, boy, bat.

§ Recognize examples of alliteration, such as Sally sells seashells by the seashore.

2. Oddity Tasks

§ Listen for the word that does not rhyme in a string of words like sat, sit, mat.

§ Listen for the word that begins with a different sound in a string of words like boy, bit, man.
