Died August 5, 1962, such a tragic day. Though this is quite the subject to get started on, I guess we should probably start from the beginning. Born June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson, after baptized, Norma Jeane Baker, more commonly know as Marilyn Monroe, was the woman of her time, and still is for that matter. She has grown more in popularity now than ever before. Only thirty-six years old when she passed but she was still one of the world’s largest sex symbols. Not only did she pass away 54 years ago, you will still be able to find pictures of her that fill stores and people that have shirts with her face, she may have been a beauty and a real sight to see but who was the real Marilyn Monroe. Over the years of her childhood she was passed around and placed into many different home that each had their own issues. She never knew who her father was but she did know her mother, Gladys. Gladys did not stay in Norma’s life too long due to the fact that she developed psychiatric problems and had to be placed in an institution for the mentally ill. One of Norma’s earliest memories of her mother is when Norma was at the young age of two, her mother had attempted to smother her while in her crib using a pillow. Norma called her “Aunt Grace.” Grace supported Norma and believed that she would one day become the star that she had always wanted to be. Grace was the only person who had shown some interest in Norma’s life. Grace decided that she was not cut out to be raising a little girl and wanted to place Norma into an orphanage. Norma fought to not be put in the orphanage but nothing helped. On weekend Grace brought gifts and took Norma to activities like movies. Grace was later married to Erwin Goddard and Norma went to live with them. This didn’t last too long due to the fact that Erwin, or Doc, was a drunk and tried to sexually harass Norma. Grace quickly found other foster homes for Norma to stay in. Grace showered Norma Jeane with ideas of fame and beauty. She told Norma she would not have to deal with being abused anymore once she was a star. She said that everyone would know who she was and respect her. Later, Grace and Doc were to move away to the East Coast and they would not be able to take Norma with them.
