In chapter, the Walk to the Jetty from Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid, Annie sacrifices her family and her home island to leave to England. Yet, she is not certain to succeed in schooling or getting a job.In Marita’s Bargain by Malcolm Gladwell, Marita sacrifices time spent with friends and spends long hours at school or doing homework. Marita is more likely to succeed due to the rank and reputation KIPP Academy has in New York City.
Marita’s devotion to KIPP almost guarantees her success in the future. “The KIPP program represents one of the most promising new educational philosophies in the United States.”(47-48) KIPP provides a prestige rank for Marita to advance than any other school. The chapter only states her opinion of deciding to leave rather than staying, not stating her ability to succeed in England. “I did not want to go to England, I did not want to be a nurse, but I would have chosen going off to live in a cavern and keeping house for seven unruly men rather than go on with my life as it stood.”(11-13) Annie is walking to the jetty knowing that she may have made a mistake of arranging her departure when she realizes her childhood had been invested in Antigua.“It was all of half an hour’s walk from our house to the jetty, but I was passing through most of the years of my life.”(187-189) Arriving at the jetty, Annie second guesses her choice of deciding to leave.“For the thing about not being able to understand and enjoy what they were saying was I had nothing to take my mind off my fear of slipping in between the boards of the jetty.”(328-330) Annie realizes she will never see her parents and her home again. “My mother and my father—I was leaving them forever.
