Mariya's Decision To Leave Home

Mariya, is an immigrant from russia, and this is a storey of her journey to the decision to now. She lived in communist Russia; the quality of living was at an all time low. Many people lived in poverty, and horrible conditions . She caught the end of it; so everyone was a pioneer. Everyone was turning a new page, and starting again with a new point of view. She did okay though. By 1993 she had a daughter and husband. Her husband wanted to go to the USA. The US was a new beginning; all the things that happened in Russia stayed in Russia. To her husband that was the dream, but Mariya didn’t think the same she wanted to stay with friends and family. She decided to leave because her husband decided to leave. It was a short trip for her and her daughter, it was only 8 hours in a plane , and so she didn’t need any assistance. But it was hard for her to decide what she would need; what to take and what to leave home in russia . She sometimes questions her decision to leave. The fact that her husband got his citizenship made her and her daughter feel more safe to come here because they knew they would be eligible for a green card; so it would make them able to go back in a year. When they first arrived her husband met them, they went to the house her husband had rented. First they came to the Detroit area; they lived in Grosse Pointe MI. Then after that she moved to Dayton Ohio. After two years in Ohio they moved to New Jersey, because her husband got a position in Philadelphia. They lived in Lewiston NJ close to the border. They lived there for a year and then after that they moved here, Massachusetts.

She misses the people that she left in Russia, she remarks that “Now it is much easier because all the electronics, like Skype you can talk and communicate, you can Facetime every day”. She tries to go back to russia every now and then. No family members came with her she travel in to a new world all on her own . She didn’t speak any english, It was a big problem for her, because she started to volunteer at her daughter's daycare just to pick up some
