“I don’t think of myself as a rebel; I just say what I think” – Marjane Satrapi, the author of Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, once said. Persepolis is an autobiography of the author as a young girl growing up throughout the Islamic Revolution, which is displayed as a graphic novel. Throughout the novel, Marjane goes through many trials which mold her to become more rebellious and independent. Marjane becomes more rebellious and independent through her classmates influence, the wars restrictions, and the adults around her.

While girls in America were wearing acid-washed jeans, Marjane had to wear a veil. One day Marjane’s mother noticed her nail polish, “You’d be better off without nail polish. You could get arrested.” (Satrapi 119). Marjane knew that by wearing nail polish that she could get arrested, but she did not care. Marjane just wanted to express herself and wear what she wants so she had to rebel by wearing nail polish. Women’s rights were very limited back then in Iran. There were groups made to arrest women we weren’t properly veiled. “They were guardians of the revolution, the women’s branch. This group had been added in 1982, to arrest women who were properly veiled.” (Satrapi 133). The guardians of the revolution were lecturing Marjane for the clothes she was wearing. She knew the caught of being risk and in rebellion she took it and got caught. After being let loose, Marjane went back to her room and played the tapes she bought illegally. No matter how much Marjane is lectured on what to wear or what to listen to, she wont listen in an act of rebellion and
