Have you ever thought about how the influence of somebody’s perspective can be so significant? Marjane Satrapi’s inexperienced perspective influences her representation of Nationalism, Religion, and Social Classes in Iran. Marjane loves her country so much that she wants to join the military, but she doesn’t realize how the revolution is changing Iran. Islam is very important to Marjane, but since she is naive she doesn’t understand the importance of the veil. As Marjane gets older she realizes how people are affected by social classes in Iran.

This photo demonstrates nationalism because the people are proud of their country. They are celebrating their country by having a parade and carrying flags. Persepolis represents this theme of nationalism when Marjane wants to help the military during the revolution. In the Islamic religion, all girls and women are required to wear a hijab. Margaret Fontaine, who is muslim, spoke about the hijab and how important it is to to the women (Fontaine speech). Religion is strongly represented in Persepolis when Marjane is young and speaks with God. For example, Marjane talks about a time she spoke with God and says, “Every night I had big discussion with God. God, give me some more time. I am not quite ready yet” (Satrapi 8). Although she has these religious conversations, her hatred towards the veil contradicts her love for her Islam. The representation of religion is influenced by Marjane’s perspective because even though she speaks with God she doesn’t understand why she has to wear the veil.
