The Roman society is one of the most interesting and most in depth topics in the history of the world. Rome’s most notable citizens have some of the most interesting backgrounds of all people who have ever lived. Rome’s society is extremely unique, organized, and strict in the way that they formally control the economy and the government. They have many strict written law codes that firmly stabilize the society and keep it in tact. Most of Rome’s most notable citizens are deceased. As a child, Mark Antony received a very good education. His studies focused on skills that would help him later on in politics. Mark Antony’s father was an effective military commander and his grandfather was a notable consul and orator. Unfortunately, Mark Antony had a largely misspent youth due to his father teaching him about war and how to be a good general. Therefore, Mark Antony’s life as a general began right away. In 54 BC, Mark Antony was sent to Gaul to join his mother’s cousin, Julius Caesar, as a staff officer. He served as a staff officer for Julius Caesar for five years. In 49 BC, Mark Antony was elected as a tribune and served as a staunch defender of Caesar against his rivals in the Senate. During this time as a staunch defender, Mark Antony was second in command to Julius Caesar, while he was in his first year as dictator. In 48 BC, Mark Antony served in Greece to support Caesar’s left wing at the Battle of Pharsalus. In Greece, Antony’s expulsion gave Caesar’s legion a rallying point as they crossed the Rubicon River. In January of 44 BC, Julius Caesar chose Mark Antony to be his co-consul. A consul is an official appointed by the government that is chosen to live in a foreign city to protect and promote the government’s citizens and interests there. Antony was quickly forced to return back to Rome to deal with the aftermath of his brother-in-law’s failed rebellion against Octavian.
