Mark Grimko Case Study #3 Upon review of the case study on Mark Grimko, I have made the conclusion that there are really two issues in this study, 1) Mr. Grimko is trying to get his faculty of middle-grade teachers to use the data he has collected and 2) whether or not he should share individual teacher performance data with all of the faculty, parents, and public. After review of the information, I have concluded that Mr. Grimko knows his problems are as follows: 1) teacher knowledge about data usage; 2) teacher review and then ignore the data; 3) teachers feel that it leads to “teaching to the test”; 4) other teachers are afraid of the process of matching teachers and students (Kowalski, 2008) and that his state does not currently have the capacity of match teacher-student performances even though he does have that data. Grimko’s first dilemma is that he wants to use professional development on data usage to help his teacher become more involved and less afraid to use data. He order to accomplish this he is planning a retreat in August with key steps in mind to help the teachers. Mr. Grimko’s key steps are summarized as follows: 1) establish a teacher data leadership team; 2) evaluate the districts established methods of obtaining data; 3) provide questioning techniques to help teachers connect what they know to what they currently do; 4) set goals and a was to evaluate those school improvement goals; 5) monitor the progression to the improvement goals. (Kowalski, 2008) Mr. Grimko’s second dilemma is should he undermine the trust of his teachers and do what he has determined to be what his student needs to achieve through data analysis? The consequences that could result from this action could have a far-reaching effect not only on the teachers, but the students, parents, and
