Ninoska Suarez History 601 Professor Nierick 10/20/14 Killing For Coal By Thomas G. Andrews Summary: Killing for Coal discusses the conditions in the Colorado coal mines leading up to the Ludlow Massacre and the Ten Day War of 1914. Andrew draws out the major players in the Colorado coal culture including land, labor, capitalized industrialization and labor resistance that give us an overall depiction of the world of coal mining in Colorado. Andrews, begins with an introduction of the graphic images of coal miners being asphyxia and slaughter by militia men and strike breakers hired by Rockefeller-owed Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, these events was later called Ludlow Massacre. These polarizing events produced coal miners to fight back which
This simile helps Erik Larson describe how rambunctious the streets were at night by painting clear imagery into his reader’s minds of the busy streets . Larson compares the noise of the city to “rolling hammers” that “produced a constant thunder,” this allows the readers to understand exactly how rambunctious the streets were. He goes on to say how the open-window summer nights were unbearable this tells the readers that the noise was so loud that it was difficult to fall asleep to. The sentence is long and seems to drag on and describes how the loud noises would last until midnight, this is clearly purposeful to help emphasize how the noise never seemed to come to an end. By comparing these noises with “rolling hammers,” Larson creates a

FRACKING AND ITS CRITICISM Since the mid-80s, The First Nations and their leaders have raised numerous concerns about the failure of the government and industries in Canada to properly consult them before developing any of their lands. Fracking is a technique used in stimulating the fracturing of rocks through the use of pressurized liquid. The fluid used comprises of hot water, sand, and proppants that are thickened using appropriate agents. The fluid enters the deep-rock and makes it possible to have natural gas, petroleum and brine flow up. If the pressure is removed, the grains in the proppants are capable of keeping the fractures while open.
“The Veldt” is a 1950’s short story written by Ray Bradbury, around a time in American history when there was a fear of technology invading our personal lives and relationships. The story is centered around a family who lives in a home that does everything for them. All of their chores, their everyday tasks, even the matter of getting to sleep are all taken care of. The house even has a nursery where whatever you think will come to life in the means of a simulation on the walls. A central theme that I found in the short story, “The Veldt” is that overdependence on technology negatively impacts one’s sense of purpose and motivation in life.
Yes there is a Power Elite in our society today, but in comparison it is not the same as it used to be in the past. C. Wright Mills had listed the power elite to be the “government; military; and corporations” (Elwell, p. 10), but today the military is not considered one of the three power elites but a tool to further boost government and corporations through the industrial elite and it’s profits. The elite’s source of power comes from the ownership of these higher positions within these organizations. The more power that they obtain, control, and dictate the more authority that they will hold.
In the novel, The Island of Dr. Moreau, by H.G. Wells, the abuse of power, the religious references and/or the pretending of God is shown from Moreau towards the beast people and it has influenced his thinking of how power and strength is used. Throughout the book, we see how Moreau’s power is abusive towards the beast people by the actions they do or the things they say. Dr. Moreau is a man that abuses his power wrongfully and in the end he had brought his own consequences upon himself. The beast people think he is a God because he created all of them, taught them how to walk, talk, eat, and do just about anything a human can do. Unfortunately all animals find a way to revert back to their primitive ways and that’s where he was wrong.
The period of the first word war had the big issue in chapters 7, moving between areas and transformed between colonial and communities was the big result of the world war. According to Anderson “its origins a response to the new style global imperialism made possible by the achievements of industrial capitalism.” After he talked about applied changes, Anderson showed his opinion of Marx ideology. But in chapter 8, he talked about some different things that are Patriotism and Racism, starting the paragraph with a question is very excited technique to get the focusing of the reader, and that what Anderson do in this chapter, he asked “why people are ready to die for these inventions” and I think here he talked about the birth place that is the
“Why Electric Cars are the Future” Introduction Attention Getter: It was Sunday at park, two college students were discussing about cars. One of them said that imagine about two decades ago, it appeared there was no effective alternative to the gasoline and oil, but now there is a better, cleaner, and more effective substitute to them: electricity. Although electric engines are not so widespread, more and more people consider changing their gasoline-fueled vehicles to electric cars. Then I discovered why electric cars are the future.
Should America Fabricate the Big Switch There are two main measuring systems in the world today and they are the Standard Measuring System and the Metric System. The Metric System is the universal measuring system and the majority of the world is using it to this day. It is the language for both science and medicine and we notice or hear it more often than not. When doctors say something with CC at the end of a measurement, that is just brief for cubic centimeter, and one cubic centimeter is equal to one milliliter. We purpose the Metric System more often than we can comprehend and we do not recognize it, whereas it has been in our lives for too long.
dubbing Prior a prophet, Marko of Cain, Judas’ betrayal of Christ, Lazarus resurrection, the importance of a sacred Book) could be applied to almost any character (Munoz 2006: 8). The reason for this, as mentioned, is Kushner’s desire to further expound on the idea of continuity through the use of religious images and references (Munoz 2006: 8). America was built by the adherents of these and other religions, most prominently Christianity, and all those pioneers who came centuries ago to the unknown land, brought with them different belief systems and customs, but in the end, they all had one thing in common–a desire for change and progress. On the other hand, another theme that Kushner extensively discusses through the perspective of religion

A lot of people love to hear about energy efficient and environmentally friendly options out there. The electric vehicles today serve great benefits in keeping emissions down and using a more friendly alternative energy source. In my opinion they have made an impact on the environment, but a major benefit in using this alternative resource is less cost to fuel the vehicle. Gasoline is very expensive today, and using the energy that is used to power our home, is much less expensive and more available than gas. The environment, as claimed by environmentalists, suffers due to the emissions of automobiles today.
According to Fleet Crama, “-there is no gas to buy, no oil to change, no smog checks, and fewer parts to break or wear out.” With cheaper prices, regardless of whether a student right out of high school is buying the vehicle or if a person with a high income rate is buying it, the price will always be lower compared to a gas vehicle. When owning an electric vehicle, people can take the money they would have spent on a gas vehicle and use it for something else. Even though gas vehicles cost $32,000, while the average EV costs $30,000 ( according to Investing General), electric vehicles do not have to worry about the prices that come from all the costs of maintenance requirements and just the cost of the car itself. So, even though a gas vehicle is $2,000 cheaper , due to all the other requirements, gas vehicles owners will end up paying more for their car than an electric vehicle
