“I've never really spent a lot of time thinking about my individual accomplishments actually.” - Mark Messier. Mark Messier has accomplished a lot during his life and career. He was a leader, a captain, and a team player. He would never see himself as an individual, he had many achievements and showed great leadership. Messier was a role model to teammates, fans, and people. First of all, Messier was a professional hockey player who played for three teams over 25 years. Also, his number hangs in the rafters of Madison Square Garden. Throughout his career, he scored 694 goals with 1,193 assists throughout his career. Most importantly, Messier is a six-time Stanley Cup Champion, winning five with the Edmonton Oilers and one with the New York Rangers. Messier won his Stanley Cups in an 11-year playoff span. He is the only captain to win two Stanley Cups with two different teams. Mark Messier’s fame grew after he accomplished winning many Stanley Cups, something that many players haven’t achieved at the levels he reached. In addition, Messier is a one-time Conn Smythe Trophy receiver, a two-time Hart Memorial Winner, and a two-time Ted Linsdey award acceptance. Messier was awarded many awards that it takes grinding and preservation to achieve. Every trophy he has earned means something a lot about himself and the greatness it takes to achieve these goals and awards. Finally, Messier has played in a career total of 1,756 games, third most all-time. There are only two players who have played in more games than Messier, Gordie Howe, and Patrick Marleau. Many players after many years would put down their careers because they were old and not as athletic as they once were. Unlike Messier, he started young and was able to play a long career. After Messier signed with the Rangers, he knew he was getting old but kept playing because of his love and dedication to the sport.
