Mark Twain, whose real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, accomplished his dream job of being a steamboat pilot but it didn't last long. Later on, he managed to get married and had four children. Before all of this, Sam was born earlier than expected, which could have been bad for his health.
Sam was born on November 30, 1835, two months ahead of schedule. A small house in Florida, Missouri, was where he was born. Sam was born on the day the when the Halley's Comet flew through the sky. He had three brothers and two sisters and moved to many different places, first when he was four years old. Hannibal, Missouri, was where he lived most of his life. He became a licensed pilot in 1859. His piloting career was cut short by the civil war, he joined the Confederate Army for a few weeks as a volunteer then was disbanded. His other jobs were a journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur, and inventor. In July of 1861, Sam headed west with his brother Orian. Sam first prospected for silver and gold expecting to become rich. Later on, he found a small vein of silver. He stopped prospecting and started a job in the newspaper business again. This is where he got his pen name Mark Twain, which is steamboat slang for 12 feet of water. One of his stories in the newspaper was printed around the country. This story is called Jim Smiley and his Jumping Frog, this lead Mark Twain to write other stories. At the age of 34, Mark Twain was one of the most popular and famous writers in America.
