Market Basket is a grocery chain store that had started off as a grocery store which specialized in fresh lamb in 1916 2. Almost forty years later the owners Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas had sold their business to two of their six children, Telemachus (Mike) and George Demoulas. Within fifteen years the supermarket chain had 15 stores. In 1971, George Demoulas died of a heart attack. The death of George made Mike the sole head of the DeMoulas supermarket chain. Both brothers had promised to provide for the other family in the chance of his death but that did not happen. The feud was key for the company to move forward as it was for the family matters. I believe Market Basket is a great family owned business that has had supreme success. Most of the employees that are at corporate level have been with the company for more than thirty years. A quote from Anne Rogers who has been with the company for nearly three decades “I’ve been working with this company for 28 years, and this has been hanging over the company’s head the whole time,” she said. “This fight was absolutely worth it. We wanted to make sure the right person had control.” 6 This shows how supportive and pleased these employees are. A lot of them started as cashiers and have moved their way up over the years. The full-time employees have the opportunity to advance from their starting point and get promoted as the years go on. Employees from Market Basket are very loyal. Efficiency is the name of the game in Market Baskets’ buying processes. All of the stores carry the same products for the most part so, the company buys in large bulks, knowing the low prices will keep shelves in need of restocking. A plus for Market Basket is that they are not in debt. That is what keeps them successful. Not having to pay off debt and the high interests rates that follow it. Having such an influential president of a company does also play a role in the triumph of the company. Arthur T. Demoulas does an outstanding job along with his hardworking employees. I believe the best decision for the company was Arthur T. Demoulas buying out Arthur S. Demoulas so he could be the sole and heart of the company. Arthur T. is on a personal level with a lot of his employees which makes him a charismatic CEO. The battle of ownership between the cousins was a necessary step forward for the Market
